An Overview

Chetna Organic Agriculture Producer Company Limited was established in the year 2009, with a focused aim of improving the livelihood of small holders farmers including tribal families, mainly dependent on rain-fed agriculture. Most of these farmers belong to states like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Odisha, though our associations are spread throughout the country. Working in association with these farmers, we bring forth a comprehensive, unadulterated, and qualitative range of Cereals, Pulses, Oil Seeds, Spices, and Millets. These products have been quality-checked before being packed and dispatched to the clients. As a Manufacturer, Supplier and Trader of a comprehensive range of Agro Products, we ensure that our customers get the best in class products at competitive prices.

We work with a clear intent to empower the farmers in rural area; we have developed this ethical supply chain through international collaboration that works on the principle of triple-bottom line objectives: Ecological-Organic, Social-Fair Trade, Sustainable-Becoming Self-sustainable. The values of the principle and the objectives are also of utmost importance in other two ventures of ours, given below:

Chetna Organic Farmers Association (COFA): It is an entire farmer owned non-profit organization that is towards capacity building. The company helps in developing new prospects for farmers by supporting co-operative activities, promote CSR investments, and advocate for rain-fed agriculture issues.

Chetna Organic Agriculture Producer Company Ltd. (COAPCL): It is a farmer-owned finance organization that serves the market as linkage commodity-trading company, developing sustainable solutions for national and international markets.

The Forum for Integrated Development (FFID): It is a professionally managed organization focused to reduce the rural distress, while empowering the communities to help small and marginal farmers. The company works in rain-fed regions, enabling the communities there to gain self-sufficiency while pushing the alternative models of livelihood, agriculture, and agro-ecology in the region. It also provides guidance and support to COFA and COAPCL.

Rajlakshmi Cotton Mills Pvt. Ltd (RCML): It is a 100% organic garment company following fair trade practices. At the initial stage, RCML purchased all our cotton products, however, as we continued to grow, we extended our client base, and in 2008, we brought the 10% stake in RCML.

Vision and Mission

Our vision is to work towards enhancing the living standards of small-holder rural households that are surviving on rain-fed agriculture, mainly in ecologically depressed regions.

We work with the mission to promote Agro Ecological Agriculture based on the three principles of sustainability (social, environment and economic).

Objectives

Below are the dynamics of our objective:

Increase the yield and reduce the cost of cultivation

We adopt well-planned, strategic approach with strong inclinations towards ecological sustenance in line with technical interventions. We are also focused towards collective marketing and internalized inputs.

Promoting viable institutions

We put consistent efforts to promote farmer-owned, well-managed, highly supervised, profitable and equitable institutions.

Generating market access through value addition

We involve farmers in decision making, enable farm-fate processing and help them in accessing wider market in commodity value chain.

Food and nutrition security

We engage in the production of organic foods while keeping the farmers on top of the value chain in the consumption process.

Women and child development

We continually work towards reducing drudgery, being sensitive to the needs of the farmers, and support the locality development in terms of supporting school, and making children conversant with sustainable farming.

Process & Integrity

  • Internal Control System (ICS) at all levels from farm to processing
  • Organic certification licenses, like NPOP and NOP etc.
  • Internal audits on 100% of its member farmers (farm audits) during each year.
  • External audits done by reputed certification bodies during each session.
  • Put in place robust testing protocol for GMO and pesticide contamination.

Programs

In association with different partners and government agencies, we have implemented following programs:

Sustainable Farms, Sustainable Futures (New Program): The project is aimed at promoting the farming practices to support the livelihoods of small, rain-fed farmers, while also ensuring judicial use of natural resources. To make this happen, we made farmers a part of various Self Help Groups (SHG) and cooperatives. This also helps in getting access to various markets. Apart from the same, we also organize Local Resource People (LRP) to provide technical assistance and training to the farmers on crop diversification.

Green Cotton (New Program): Through this project, we promote the organic cotton production in India. Most of the organic cotton farmers find it difficult to source good quality non-GM cultivars. Under this program, we put in efforts in developing cotton cultivars along high production system and irrigation facilities.

Seed Guardians (New Program): Through this program, we strive to promote cropping system approach and cotton cultivation among small farmers. Herein, we usually work with farmers from economically depressed region, mainly Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra.

Chetna Organic & Fair Trade Cotton Intervention Program: This program is an initiative to provide social-economic stability to small farmers and improve their entrepreneurial capacity.

Some of the other programs and initiatives undertaken by us are as follows:

  • Programs 2Jackpot Community Development Program
  • Peace By Peace Cotton Project

Achievements

We believe in creating positive impact in the lives of farmers. Below is the journey of ours, reflecting our achievements so far:

We have included more than 18,200 farmers into our association, out of which, 9647 farmers have received organic certifications. We are in the process to increase the number of farmers by expanding into new villages. Among the total farmers, 94% of the farmers own more than 2 hectares of land. We are operating through various government programs in Adilabad district with INR 55 million outlays, namely:

  • Convergence of Agriculture Initiatives in Maharashtra (CAIM) Program
  • Integrated Watershed Management Program (IWMP)
  • Government of Maharashtra and Orissa Tribal Empowerment and Livelihoods Project (OTELP)

The programs are supported by IFAD and local, state governments.

Our farmers are categorized into 13 cluster level cooperatives. At all the phases, these cooperatives work in a collaborative environment, aggregating their produce and collect sales through us. Together, they have generated a trade surplus of over 15 million, apart from the 50 Million that they have generated through investments/grants/subsidies.

Economic Impact

In Orissa, we are working with more 3000 farmers and have created an income of Euro 563300. Additionally, our trade surplus has been more than Euro 130000 at the cooperative level, excluding the 85,000 that we have generated from client brands in farmer welfare.

Around 5000 acres of land is used by 3000 farmers for organic farming that saves a cultivation cost up to 150000. Our seed multiplication program covers the land up 1800 acres in Orissa.

We received a cash prize of INR 100000 by NABARD for our Indo-German NGO Watershed Development Program (IGWDP) supported by NABARD.

We are also working towards augmenting the soil quality with group of 7 partner NGOs, while focusing diversifying farming systems and creating policy frame work farmers depended on rainfed agriculture. We work with the objective to create a unified platform for institutional mechanism, public support systems, and latest technology.

Chetna Organic Impact

Our works have been reviewed and evaluated by Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture (CRIDA), a Government of India agency. Further, the agency found the following:

  • Our market interventions have generated an additional income of the Euro 283300 from its 3000 farmers.
  • Our trade surpluses have been around Euro. 130,000, excluding the Euro. 85,000 investments generated through clients' investments.
  • We have brought 3000 farmers and 5000 acres of land under organic farming.
