Chetna Organic Farmers Association (COFA): It is an entire farmer owned non-profit organization that is towards capacity building. The company helps in developing new prospects for farmers by supporting co-operative activities, promote CSR investments, and advocate for rain-fed agriculture issues.
The Forum for Integrated Development (FFID): It is a professionally managed organization focused to reduce the rural distress, while empowering the communities to help small and marginal farmers. The company works in rain-fed regions, enabling the communities there to gain self-sufficiency while pushing the alternative models of livelihood, agriculture, and agro-ecology in the region. It also provides guidance and support to COFA and COAPCL. Rajlakshmi Cotton Mills Pvt. Ltd (RCML): It is a 100% organic garment company following fair trade practices. At the initial stage, RCML purchased all our cotton products, however, as we continued to grow, we extended our client base, and in 2008, we brought the 10% stake in RCML.
Sustainable Farms, Sustainable Futures (New Program): The project is aimed at promoting the farming practices to support the livelihoods of small, rain-fed farmers, while also ensuring judicial use of natural resources. To make this happen, we made farmers a part of various Self Help Groups (SHG) and cooperatives. This also helps in getting access to various markets. Apart from the same, we also organize Local Resource People (LRP) to provide technical assistance and training to the farmers on crop diversification.
Green Cotton (New Program): Through this project, we promote the organic cotton production in India. Most of the organic cotton farmers find it difficult to source good quality non-GM cultivars. Under this program, we put in efforts in developing cotton cultivars along high production system and irrigation facilities.
Seed Guardians (New Program): Through this program, we strive to promote cropping system approach and cotton cultivation among small farmers. Herein, we usually work with farmers from economically depressed region, mainly Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
Chetna Organic & Fair Trade Cotton Intervention Program: This program is an initiative to provide social-economic stability to small farmers and improve their entrepreneurial capacity. Some of the other programs and initiatives undertaken by us are as follows:

We believe in creating positive impact in the lives of farmers. Below is the journey of ours, reflecting our achievements so far: We have included more than 18,200 farmers into our association, out of which, 9647 farmers have received organic certifications. We are in the process to increase the number of farmers by expanding into new villages. Among the total farmers, 94% of the farmers own more than 2 hectares of land. We are operating through various government programs in Adilabad district with INR 55 million outlays, namely:
Convergence of Agriculture Initiatives in Maharashtra (CAIM) Program
Integrated Watershed Management Program (IWMP)
Government of Maharashtra and Orissa Tribal Empowerment and Livelihoods Project (OTELP)
The programs are supported by IFAD and local, state governments.
Our farmers are categorized into 13 cluster level cooperatives. At all the phases, these cooperatives work in a collaborative environment, aggregating their produce and collect sales through us. Together, they have generated a trade surplus of over 15 million, apart from the 50 Million that they have generated through investments/grants/subsidies.
In Orissa, we are working with more 3000 farmers and have created an income of Euro 563300. Additionally, our trade surplus has been more than Euro 130000 at the cooperative level, excluding the 85,000 that we have generated from client brands in farmer welfare. Around 5000 acres of land is used by 3000 farmers for organic farming that saves a cultivation cost up to 150000. Our seed multiplication program covers the land up 1800 acres in Orissa.
We received a cash prize of INR 100000 by NABARD for our Indo-German NGO Watershed Development Program (IGWDP) supported by NABARD. We are also working towards augmenting the soil quality with group of 7 partner NGOs, while focusing diversifying farming systems and creating policy frame work farmers depended on rainfed agriculture. We work with the objective to create a unified platform for institutional mechanism, public support systems, and latest technology.
